What’s in Boba? Boba Ingredients Comparison

Whats in boba?  The question every boba lover has at least once. Boba (also known as bubble tea) continues to grow in populariTEA across North America. According to forecasting reports, the boba market is expected to reach $4.3 billion by 2027. However, most consumers don’t know that the majority of packaged boba available in North America does not mirror the natural, artisanal boba in Taiwan.

What’s in boba?

A post shared by Better Boba (@thebetterboba)

Unfortunately, almost ALL of the packaged boba in North America is produced with artificial ingredients, modified starches, and preservatives. “Modified” means the tapioca flour was treated with chemicals to change its structure and make it more resistant to breakage. Many of the nutrients are lost during the modification process and there is a high risk of contamination.

The Other Boba

Many consumers can’t digest packaged boba with artificial ingredients. General complaints include stomach cramps and other abdominal pain.

We encourage you to read the labels and learn all about the other packaged boba pearls available in North America. They are loaded with synthetic and modified ingredients, artificial colors, and preservatives.

Check out the artificial ingredients in other classic pearls on the market, directly from their labels:

The Better Choice is clear… It’s Better Boba.

With only four natural ingredients – the way artisanal boba was originally created in Taiwan –  better boba is soft, delicious, and easy to digest.

As more ingredients are restricted and banned across the world, it becomes even more important to produce a healthier alternative. The fewer ingredients, the fewer opportunities of a recall, contamination, or ingredient scarcity. For business owners, having a boba produced in the United States limits international fulfillment delays, increased costs, and inventory headaches.  By limiting ingredients and controlling production, we are confident that our boba is a better alternative.

Enjoy Boba Responsibly

We want you to not only love boba but also love that you can enjoy a natural, delicious boba without artificial ingredients and preservatives. From ice cream to acai bowls, enjoy your boba responsibly.

Boba Margarita for Cinco De Mayo

Boozy Boba Margaritas for Cinco De Mayo

This tasty Boba Margarita is a boba-licious take on your traditional Cinco De Mayo celebration.

Cinco De Mayo, celebrated on May the 5th, is the annual holiday commemorating the anniversary of Mexico’s victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. More popular in the United States than Mexico as a celebration of Mexican-American culture, Cinco De Mayo is normally enjoyed with beer, margaritas, and parades.  We were looking for a more creative take on the usual libations – something unique. Enter, the Boba Margarita.

This 4-ingredient drink is a celebration of Cinco De Mayo and a homage to the four natural ingredients used to make better boba’s all natural tapioca pearls.  This should be the perfect amount for a shareable pitcher.

Equipment

  • 1 Pitcher

Ingredients

Boba Margarita Ingredients

  • 3 cups Tequila: Silver or reposado is traditionally considered to be the best tequila for margaritas, but any type of tequila (or smoky mezcal or sotol) will work.
  • 1 cup Freshly Squeezed Lime Juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice is always best, but feel free to use store bought juice to save time.
  • 2 cups Orange Liqueur: Any will do, but but we prefer Grand Marnier or Cointreau. You can also use a good-quality Triple Sec.
  • All Natural Better Boba: Our Brown Sugar Boba pairs perfectly.

Optional Ingredients

  • Agave: An elegant solution for those looking for a sweeter drink. Any Agave will do, but we particularly like the Kirkland Signature Organic Blue Agave.
  • Kosher Sea Salt: Run a lime wedge around the rims of your glasses, and dip the rims in the salt.
  • Additional Lime Slices: Save a few extra lime slices or wedges if you would like to add them to the glass as garnish.

Instructions

How to make a Boba Margarita:

  • Prep your glasses: If you would like to salt the rims of your glasses, simply run a juicy lime wedge around the rims. Then dip the rims in coarse Kosher salt.  Set the glasses aside until ready to use.
  • Stir the ingredients together in a large pitcher: Combine the tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur and a handful of ice in a large pitcher and stir to combine.
  • Taste and add sweetener, if desired: Give the margarita mix a taste, and if you think it needs extra sweetener, add in a tablespoon or two of agave at a time, until the drink reaches your desired level of sweetness.
  • Serve over boba. Prepare your classic boba pearls and add 2 tablespoons of better boba into each serving glass; pour the margarita mix over the ice and garnish each glass with a slice of lime.

Recipe Variations:

  • Smoky Finish: Use Mezcal instead of Tequila for a smoky finish
  • Add Spice If you like your margarita to have a kick, try muddling a few slices of fresh jalapeño or serrano chilis into the margarita mix. Note that a few chili slices go a long way with a single serving.
  • “Skinny” margaritas: Looking to shave  off some calories (and alcoholic content)? Try substituting freshly-squeezed orange juice in place of the orange liqueur to make a calorie friendly version.
  • Virgin margaritas: Instead of using tequila, mix freshly squeezed lime juice & orange juice combined with some agave nectar and sparking water

Guru loves better boba

Guru’s Favorite Snack

While generally compared to beluga caviar, Colo Claw Fish Eggs are a snack of the galaxy’s elite. Our much more accessible boba is a fun way to class up your Star Wars charcuterie board. Colo claw fish were native to the planets Naboo and Odona. In 32 BBY, Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Jar Jar Binks used a Gungan bongo submarine to travel through Naboo’s core to get to Theed. Their bongo was attacked by a Colo claw fish, which was then attacked and devoured by a sando aqua monster.  Eventually, the eggs were offered to Han Solo by Dryden Vos in the self-titled film Solo.

National Bubble Tea Day

National Bubble Tea Day: Celebrating with Bubble Tea Recipes & All-Natural Boba

What is National Bubble Tea Day?

National Bubble Tea Day celebrates the beloved Taiwanese drink that originated in the 1980s. Bubble Tea is also known as boba, pearl milk tea, or tapioca tea.  It often contains tapioca pearls or boba. This refreshing & delicious drink has become a global sensation in the past few decades due to its unique texture, customizable flavors, and Boba-licious aesthetic.

When Is National Bubble Tea Day?

April 30th marks National Bubble Tea Day in 2023. This year is the 5-year anniversary of the holiday, as in 2018 it was added to the calendar by Kung Fu Tea of NYC. This day was selected because it was the day they opened their first tea shop in New York City.

BOBA BY THE NUMBERS

  • 2018 – The first year of National Bubble Tea Day
  • 2012 – The year when all 800 McDonald’s locations in Germany sold bubble tea
  • 2 – The number of conflicting origin stories about bubble tea
  • 4 – The number of ingredients used in Better Boba’s Tapioca Pearls

The History Of Boba

The original bubble tea contained hot Taiwanese black tea, tapioca pearls, condensed milk, and syrup. These days, bubble tea is commonly served cold, and with various teas and flavors. The tapioca pearls that make bubble tea so unique were initially made from cassava starch, a tropical shrub known for its starchy roots introduced to Taiwan from South America during Japanese colonial rule. Larger pearls from China known as pinyin quickly replaced these and are now the norm in most bubble tea beverages.

In the 1990s, bubble tea spread throughout Southeast Asia. In places like Hong Kong, Mainland China, Japan, Vietnam, and Singapore, the bubble tea trend expanded rapidly among young people. It wasn’t uncommon for people to line up for more than thirty minutes to get a cup of the drink. As a result, boba mania has grown well beyond the beverage itself, with boba lovers inventing various bubble tea foods such as bubble tea ice cream, bubble tea pizza, bubble tea toast, bubble tea sushi, bubble tea ramen, etc.

How To Make Strawberry Bubble Tea

  • First, prepare the strawberry puree: (2-3 servings).  The strawberry puree can be done a few different ways, but getting it right makes all the difference.  Sure the boba is the star of the show, but the strawberry puree is the supporting case.  Any great team is only as good as its weakest link.

If using FROZEN strawberries:

  • Soak 1 ¼ cups of diced frozen strawberry with 3 tbsp sugar.
  • Let sit at room temperature for 20 minutes.
  • Blend the strawberry mixture until a drizzling consistency.

If using FRESH strawberries:

  • Place 1 ¼ cups of diced strawberry and 3 tbsp sugar in a blender.
  • Add 1 tbsp of water; more can be added if you prefer a thinner puree.
  • Blend the strawberry mixture until a drizzling consistency.

Making The Strawberry Milk (Love a different fruit? Go for it!)

  • Add Better Boba Brown Sugar all-natural pearls to a cup. Top with ice.
  • Add 2-3 tbsp of strawberry puree.
  • Fill the cup with your milk of choice – dairy, oat, soy, almond, or coconut.
  • Grab a reusable straw and enjoy! We love the Biggie Straw from Final, as it was designed for Boba.

Pro Tip:

  • Consider using a dairy free alternative like Oat Milk to add a a sweet taste. In addition, you can ensure that the drink can be enjoyed by those who might struggle with dairy. For those who are feeling extra adventurous, you could try homemade oat milk.
